Ductless Mini-Split System Repair
When a mini-split isn’t operating normally, it’s often due to buildup of dust and debris on the indoor unit filters. These filters should be cleaned 1-2 times a month. Common repair issues that require professional service include:
- Electrical connection errors
- Faulty or broken thermostat
- Water or refrigerant leaks
- Short-cycling
- Frozen coils
- Clogged drain lines
- Faulty or broken fan
To correctly indentify one or more of these issues, we’ll begin with a full inspection of the unit. Then, setting adjustments, cleaning, part replacements or repairs will be made before a final efficiency test is performed.
Not all units can be repaired, though. Our service professionals will make every attempt to repair your unit before suggesting a replacement.
Ductless AC Replacement
If repairs persist and increase in cost, it’s likely time to replace your mini-split. Some other signs your unit needs replacing include:
- Significant efficiency decrease
- Major leaks
- Old age (10-20 years)
When choosing to replace your existing ductless mini-split, our service professionals will suggest new units that are at least as or more efficient than your existing mini-split. Once selected, we’ll carefully remove and properly dispose of your old units.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tell me how to clean mini-split filters?
To clean your washable indoor unit filters, turn off your unit, open the front panel, and then carefully remove the plastic mesh filters. Then, gently rinse the dust and grime off with warm water. If need be, use a mild detergent to remove any remaining grime. Once clean, leave them out to air dry before placing them back in the units. This process should be repeated monthly, or whenever excess buildup occurs.
Why is my ductless mini-split not cooling?
There are a few reasons for this issue, including:
- Refrigerant leak
- Thermostat error
- Dirty filters
- Icy condenser coils
The only way to definitively diagnose the problem is via in-person assessment. Contact your local Aire Serv to schedule service.
Why is my mini-split icing up?
Low refrigerant levels are often to blame for a mini-split icing up. This is because refrigerant is what helps to absorb heat. So if the refrigerant is low in your mini split, the unit will have to work harder to create cool air, in turn creating excessive cooling that may cause it to ice up. Another reason your mini-split may ice up is due to dirty condenser coils. If these coils are dirty, your unit will not be able to work efficiently, and therefore end up overworking and overcooling again.
