How to Go Green at Home
Looking for tips for going green at home? Here are some easy and practical ways to start …
- Use Less Paper
Opt-out of paper catalogs, get rid of notepads and use travel mugs instead of paper cups. You can go digital with your bills and use dry erase boards to reduce the amount of paper you use in your home. More trees = less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is one of our favorite tips for going green at home.
- Upgrade Your Flooring
If you’re considering a home renovation, green your floors by installing bamboo or repurposed wood. Bamboo is environmentally friendly and repurposed wood means saving trees.
- Use Less Plastic
Reduce the amount of plastic you use. When you go to the grocery store, don’t buy plastic sandwich bags, plastic cups, or gallon milk containers and choose paper over plastic (then re-use or recycle the paper grocery bags).
- Choose ENERGY STAR Appliances
Replacing your home appliances with energy-efficient ones gives your home a modern look and feel while reducing your electric or gas bill. Especially if your appliances are more than 10 years old, upgrade to an ENERGY STAR-certified option.
- Switch from Natural Gas
Replace carbon-intensive gas-powered appliances like furnaces, water heaters, and stoves with greener options like electric or solar water heaters, geothermal heating, and electric or conduction stovetops. (You’ll also be reducing/eliminating the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning happening in your home.)
- Flip the Switch
Turn off lights in rooms you’re not using. You can also “flip” to rooftop solar power to reduce or eliminate your carbon footprint from your electric utility.
